World production of citrus in 2017 was 147 million tonnes. It was the 18th most cultivated crop after sugar cane at 1842 million tonnes, maize at 1135 million tonnes, wheat at 772 million tonnes, potatoes at 388 million tonnes and tomatoes at 182 million tonnes, followed by watermelons at 118 million tonnes, bananas at 114 million tonnes and oranges at 73 million tonnes.

Consumption of citrus in 2013

Consumption of citrus across the world in 2013 was 11 million tonnes. It was the 67th most consumed food item after wheat at 458 million tonnes, sugar cane at 32 million tonnes, plantains at 23 million tonnes and lemons at 14 million tonnes. Some items consumed less than citrus in 2013 include grapefruit and products at 8 million tonnes, dates at 7 million tonnes and oats at 4 million tonnes.
